Visibility is fundamental to safe driving. When was the last time you changed your wiper blades? Summer brings heat and rain which means your wiper blades are exposed to the elements and wear. It may be time to buy new ones.
First, you should pull the windshield wiper blade away from the windshield and inspect your wiper blades. Make sure that they are free of debris and form an effective seal on the windshield. Some indicators that you should replace your blades include:
- cracks or tears in the wiper blade due to ultraviolet sunlight
- loose fittings or connections to the windshield wiper
- streaking which occurs when the rubber squeegee dries, hardens and cracks. It can also be caused by tree sap, road tar and other foreign substances collected on either the glass or the blade.
- Skipping occurs when the blade develops a curvature from lack of use
Maintaining your vehicle is vital to safe driving. Wiper blades should be changed at least once a year. An excellent time to clean your windshield is every time you fill up with gas.
